What does the camera, through exposing the sensitive medium for a finite period, do to movement?

Early cameras used sensitised materials which were very slow – they needed a lot of light to form a latent image which resulted in long exposure times.  By modern standards they would seem interminable; the earliest materials needed tens of minutes.
